Ellen DeGeneres says she's no longer living in US because of Trump presidency

The former talk show host revealed the motivation behind her move to the English countryside during a public appearance.

WASHINGTON — Ellen DeGeneres opened up about her move away from the United States in a recent event.

The former talk show host confirmed that Trump’s re-election was the motivation behind the move to the English countryside with wife Portia de Rossi, according to BBC and the Guardian. DeGeneres’ comments come as she made her first public appearance since resettling in England.

“We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in’,” DeGeneres told the crowd at the Everyman theatre. “And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.”

The 67-year-old also revealed that she and De Rossi had only planned to spend three or four months out of the year in the UK when they bought what they thought would be a “part-time house.” The couple bought the house in Cotswold, England, in 2024 following the end of her comedy tour.

“It’s clean,” DeGeneres said. “Everything here is just better — the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here. We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life. We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks.”

DeGeneres also hinted that she and de Rossi might get remarried in England if the U.S. overturns same-sex marriage. The comedian and de Rossi have been married since 2008, when California overturned the ban on gay marriage.

“The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage,” she said, referencing how Southern Baptist delegates at their national meeting overwhelmingly endorsed a ban on same-sex marriage. “They’re trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it. Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we’re going to get married here.”

“I wish we were at a place where it was not scary for people to be who they are. I wish that we lived in a society where everybody could accept other people and their differences,” she added later in the talk. “So, until we’re there, I think there’s a hard place to say we have huge progress.”

The former talk show host is just one of several celebrities who have moved away from the U.S. following the 2024 election.

Rosie O’Donnell announced in late 2024 that she had moved to Ireland and is in the process of obtaining Irish citizenship based on family lineage.

O’Donnell and Trump have longed criticized each other publicly, a feud that pre-dates Trump’s presidency. Earlier this month, Trump and O’Donnell reignited their public comments after the comedian denounced moves by his administration, including the president’s massive tax break and spending cuts plan.

In response, Trump threatened to “take away” O’Donnell’s U.S. citizenship.

“Because of the fact that Rosie O’Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship,” Trump wrote in a social media post on July 12. He added that O’Donnell should stay in Ireland “if they want her.”

Eva Longoria also announced in November 2024 that she no longer lives in the U.S. full-time.

“I’m privileged. I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them,” she said in an interview with Marie Claire.
