Fire erupts in US Capitol trolley system, 2 police officers taken to hospital

Officials reported that a pair of police officers required hospital treatment following a fire incident on Thursday afternoon involving the trolley system linking the Rayburn House and the U.S. Capitol.

The D.C. Fire and EMS Department stated that emergency teams addressed a minor electrical blaze on the underground trolley, which was swiftly brought under control.

Authorities confirmed that two members of the U.S. Capitol Police were transported to the hospital for precautionary assessments.

The incident happened in a tunnel connecting to the U.S. Capitol, according to officials.

Thankfully, no trolley passengers sustained injuries during the incident, officials assured.

It is unclear who was in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

As of 6:25 p.m. local time, all smoke was cleared and authorities were clearing the scene.

The Metropolitan Police Department said Independence Avenue was closed in both directions between Washington Avenue, SW and Second Street, SE, but later reopened.

The U.S. Capitol subway system is used to move lawmakers, aides and high-profile guests safely between government buildings.

Its three lines are operated and maintained by the Architect of the Capitol (AOC).
