Savannah Guthrie is set to make a heartfelt return to The Today Show for an emotional interview with Hoda Kotb, marking her first on-screen appearance since her mother’s disappearance.

Hoda Kotb, who has been standing in for Guthrie on The Today Show, offered viewers a glimpse of the compelling two-part interview during Wednesday’s (March 25) morning segment. In this poignant conversation, both Guthrie and Kotb struggle to hold back tears as Guthrie discusses the “agony” surrounding the ongoing investigation and urges the public to come forward with any information they might possess.

“Someone needs to do the right thing,” Guthrie implored. “We are in agony. It is unbearable.”

While visibly emotional, Guthrie added, “Imagining what she endured keeps me awake every single night. In those dark hours, I envision her fear—it’s beyond comprehension, yet these haunting thoughts are relentless, and I refuse to turn away.”

It has now been 53 days since Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Arizona home on January 31. During this distressing period, Savannah has been absent from the NBC daytime show, while Kotb—who stepped back from full-time NBC duties in 2025—alongside Sheinelle Jones and Laura Jarrett, have been filling her role.

Kotb told their colleagues Carson Daly, Craig Melvin and Al Roker this was “a really emotional conversation” for them both. But she praised Savannah’s “steeliness.”

“I was sort of marveling that she was able to sit there, with an outfit on, have a conversation and also have just direct thoughts about what she sees going forward,” Kotb said of Savannah. Kotb explained the interview touches upon the ongoing investigation, as well as how Savannah’s faith has “sustained her.”

“No one’s stealing her joy. So we’ll see both sides of that,” Kotb said.

It remains to be seen when Savannah will return to the daily broadcast. Variety reports NBC will likely announce Savannah’s return date “in coming days.”

Jenna Bush Hager, Savannah’s good friend and fellow Today colleague, confirmed Savannah plans on returning to the show at some point.

“She said that she has the intention to return to the show even though it feels like the hardest thing to do,” Bush Hager said. “It’s also her home and where she feels so loved. And she is beyond loved here. So we’re happy she’s home.”

Guthrie’s two-part interview will air on The Today Show Thursday, March 26 and Friday, March 27.
