On Sunday, Mayor Eric Adams delivered a sharp response to Public Advocate Jumaane Williams following a lighthearted social media post suggesting Williams might step in to lead New York City if the mayor didn’t return soon.
Williams pointed out that according to the city charter, the role of public advocate includes stepping in as acting mayor if the current mayor is out of the city for nine consecutive days. Adams was on the eighth day of his international journey, having visited Israel, Albania, and Uzbekistan.
In a playful post on X, Williams remarked, “We’re ready at City Hall just in case he decides to add another globetrotting stop—or his flight gets delayed a few hours,” accompanied by a video of himself humorously “preparing” to assume mayoral duties.
Adams, still on his extensive tour, promptly responded to Williams’ teasing post.
Adams clapped back at Williams while still on his multi-stop excursion.
“One has to feel a bit bad watching a four-year attempt to become Mayor by every means except winning over the voters finally crash and burn,” Adams responded in his own post. “I genuinely hope you find some peace and happiness moving forward.”
It’s just the latest back-and-forth between the rivals, who trade insults regularly. After Adams was indicted this year, Williams attended a rally calling for him to resign.
Adams is due to leave office at year’s end after the election of Zohran Mamdani.
Williams was re-elected for the position in November.
