McDonald's fans go wild as fan-favorite item returns

McDonald’s has brought back a fan favorite menu item – but only for a limited time.

The fast food giant is already celebrating St Patrick’s Day by bringing back its iconic mint-flavored Oreo Shamrock McFlurry, which debuted in 2020.

The bright green seasonal dessert is a popular treat made with vanilla soft serve and ‘Shamrock’ mint syrup, along with Oreo cookie pieces mixed in for extra flavor.

The item returned to menus on February 10, and will be available through March 23.

McDonald’s mentioned in a press release that ‘Shamrock season comes around only once a year,’ but their Shamrock McFlurry is always available to satisfy anyone’s sweet cravings.

The chain has also brought back its original Shamrock Shake, which was first introduced at select restaurants in 1970.

Also bright green in color, the sweet treat is also made with vanilla soft serve and mint syrup, but comes topped with whipped cream.

The creation of this festive dessert dates back to the late 1960s when Hal Rosen, a McDonald’s owner and operator in Connecticut, came up with the idea to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, as reported by The News Tribune.

McDonald’s will donate 25 cents to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) from Shamrock Shake sales, with the goal of raising $50,000 nights for families in need.

The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry comes in a mini and regular size, and costs around $4 depending on the restaurant.

The dessert originally debuted in February 2020 in honor of the Shamrock Shake’s 50th anniversary.

In previous years, fans have gone wild for the sweet treat and lined up outside restaurants to get their hands on one.

This year, fans have taken to social media to express their excitement about its return.

‘The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry goes insanely hard,’ one user wrote on X.

‘I can’t wait,’ said another.

It comes as McDonald’s announced it was also bringing back another long-time fan favorite to help combat a slump in sales.

McDonald’s on Monday announced a surprise drop in US sales for the fourth quarter of 2024, linked in part to a fatal E. coli outbreak last year.

‘Obviously, our performance in 2024 did not meet our expectations,’ CEO Chris Kempczinski, said earlier this week as he discussed October to December earnings.

‘As we transition into 2025, several factors give me confidence that our performance will return to proper form over the next several quarters.’

The company is banking on nostalgia with the long-awaited return of the beloved Snack Wrap, an extension of the McValue Menu promotion, and launching a new chicken strip menu to capitalize on the ongoing demand for poultry.

The snack wrap, featuring crispy chicken, cheese, and dressing in a tortilla wrap, was a fan-favorite for years until McDonald’s discontinued the offering in 2016.

The company also built on its discount offerings beyond the $5 McValue menu with a ‘Buy One, Add One for $1’ offer.

In the morning, customers can add a $1 Sausage McMuffin, Sausage Biscuit, Sausage Burrito, or hash browns to any full-priced order.

In the afternoon, restaurants will add a 6-pc Chicken McNuggets, Double Cheeseburger, McChicken, or Small Fries for just $1 added to a full-priced meal.

The $5 deal includes four items – a choice of the McDouble or McChicken sandwich, small fries, 4-piece Chicken McNuggets and a small soft drink.
