On Tuesday, the family of Rob Reiner gathered to mourn the tragic loss of the renowned filmmaker and his wife, whose lives were violently taken over the weekend.

Lucas Reiner, Rob’s brother, was captured in photographs welcoming extended family to his Los Angeles residence, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Amidst their shared sorrow, the family embraced tightly, coinciding with the news that Rob’s son, Nick Reiner, has been formally charged with the murder of his parents.

The 32-year-old, who has battled addiction, mental health issues, and periods of homelessness, now faces the possibility of a life sentence or even the death penalty if found guilty of the charges.

At his home, the 62-year-old artist Lucas was seen stepping onto his lawn, warmly greeting arriving relatives with heartfelt hugs.

Also glimpsed was his daughter Rose, who held another mourner closely as they greeted each other on the sidewalk. 

Like his brother Rob, Lucas followed their father Carl and mother Estelle Reiner into the arts.

But where Rob initially focused on comedy writing and acting, before becoming an acclaimed filmmaker, Lucas honed in on the fine arts.

The youngest child of the Reiner children, he studied in prestigious art programs at the Parsons School of Design and The New School for Social Research in the 1970s and ’80s, and he has exhibited his paintings in several group and solo shows since the early ’90s. 

Lucas’ paintings have vacillated between abstract images inspired by modernist painters and more representational minimalist paintings, but he is also known for his photography and for having directed multiple short and feature films. 

Carl and Estelle Reiner also have a middle daughter, Lucas’ older sister Annie Reiner, who also followed her parents into the arts as an author, poet and playwright.

Rob and Michele’s deaths were confirmed on Sunday night in a family statement about the tragic news. 

‘It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,’ said a family spokesperson. ‘We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.’

Lucas was seen in one photo as he greeted a mourner who was using a cane.

Rob’s brother managed a smile amid the tragedy as he wrapped his arm around them.

Lucas’ daughter Rose arrived at the house in a similarly casual look and also managed to smile as she was greeted by a woman in sporty clothing who gave her a hug. 

She appeared to have brought along supplies for the family gathering, including several boxes and bags and a lovely floral bouquet that popped out over the top. 

A woman who appeared to be Lucas’ wife Maud Winchester was pictured stepping out to the street in a casual gray–green sweater and a charcoal hat with a wide floppy brim.

She was seen heading out to her car with a green hip bag slung over her shoulder and around her torso.

She appeared to grab a large white shopping back from her car to bring back to the house. 

Another male mourner arrived looking more dressed up in a navy blue button-up shirt with dark pants and black sneakers. 

He had brought along several bottles in a cardboard carrier, as well as a small box wrapped with string. 

He and Lucas greeted each other as he walked up to the house. 

As Maud walked back to the house, two other female mourners arrived, including Livia Reiner, another of Lucas’ daughters. 

Livia is a singer–songwriter in the band Monogamy, which has shared several of its singles on YouTube. 

Rob’s surviving family members were gathering shortly after his son Nick had been arrested and charged with the double murder of his parents.

The charges carry a maximum of life in prison or the death penalty, but Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has not yet announced whether he intends to seek the death penalty.

Nick is currently being held without bail on suicide watch in administrative segregation at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in LA.

Suspicion quickly turned to him after his parents’ bodies were discovered by his sister Romy Reiner, as she told investigators that her brother was ‘dangerous’ and ‘should be a suspect.’

On Tuesday, police sources revealed that Rob and Michele Reiner had likely been dead for several hours before their bodies were found in their home, as they were already in a state of rigor mortis.

The When Harry Met Sally filmmaker and his photographer wife had been stabbed to death, and their throats had been slit.

The two may have been asleep in bed together when they were killed, a source close to the investigation told the Daily Mail. 

Nick had joined his parents the night before their bodies were discovered at a holiday party thrown by Conan O’Brien, but he reportedly stood out at the party because he was dressed in casual clothes while the other celebrity guests were dressed in fancier attire. 

Nick was said to have left some of the guests concerned with his appearance and behavior, and he reportedly got into a clash with Bill Hader that led Rob and Michele to leave the party.

According to NBC News, a source alleged that Nick ‘interrupted Hader’ at O’Brien’s party.

When the former SNL star told him that he was ‘in the middle of a private conversation,’ Nick allegedly looked annoyed.

‘Nick just stood there and stared before storming off,’ they claimed, adding that the other guests were unnerved by the unusual display. 

Nick was also reportedly seen arguing with his father loud enough for others to hear their conversation at the event.

A source close to the investigation told the Daily Mail that investigators were looking into whether Nick might have killed his parents on Saturday night, after they had left the party.

‘He could have done it not long after they all went home, meaning he went there and slit their throats in the middle of the night,’ they said. ‘They were in bed when that happened.’ 

A source with knowledge of the situation described the interior of the Reiner’s $13.5 million mansion as looking like a ‘Hollywood horror-scene nightmare,’ according to People.

Nick, whose dramatic arrest outside an LA Metro station was captured in photos released by the LAPD, had struggled for years with mental illness and drug addiction, including bouts of homelessness after he said he refused to go back to rehab and allegedly had nowhere else to go.

Prior to his arrest, he had checked in to the Pierside Santa Monica hotel, where staff subsequently found his shower ‘full of blood’ and saw a trail of blood leading toward his bed.

He had also allegedly covered his window with a bedsheet, according to TMZ.

In 2016, Nick collaborated with his father on the film Being Charlie. Nick was credited as co-writer and said the film was loosely based on his own experiences with drug abuse and rehab, while his father directed the film.
