Why parents anonymously bully their children online revealed by expert

‘Bully Hunter’ Dr. James McGibney claims he could have quickly identified the mother who deceived her daughter through catfishing for years and shared startling insights into the incident.

Kendra Licardi, 44, from Michigan, served more than a year behind bars after she pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking a minor.

The unsettling story is detailed in the Netflix documentary Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, where the mother sent countless abusive and threatening messages to her daughter, Lauryn, as well as her daughter’s then-boyfriend, Owen McKenny.

Kendra was only caught when cops traced an IP address for the phone number to her.

Dr. James, known as ‘Bully Hunter,’ specializes in cyber security and has dedicated his career to assisting numerous victims of online crimes and striving to hold digital offenders accountable.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Mail ahead of the release of his own A&E special, Bully Hunter, Dr James weighed in on the case – and declared ‘it would have taken me 15 minutes’ to find the perpetrator.

Identifying where law enforcement went wrong, he claimed they didn’t take the case seriously. He also argued that parents bullying their children, especially anonymously, is more common than you might expect.

‘I don’t think they were serious enough about it initially, to be honest,’ he said.

‘When it comes to the real world, if you’re dealing with a real-world stalker that is showing up to your house on a daily basis, the police are going to get involved and are probably going to arrest that person.

‘When it’s done online, some police are just not equipped to understand the intricacies of that.’

Dr James also said that he has seen many cases of mothers’ catfishing their daughters.

‘A lot of people are shocked that a mother would do that to her daughter, but I deal with that a lot,’ he said.

‘I deal with mothers who are not happy with who their daughters are dating so they go after the boyfriend, and they’ll make up stuff about the guy and they do that to their kids.

‘You’d be shocked how much of a bully a parent can be, not only to their own kids, but to other kids.’

Dr James has helped numerous victims of cyberbullying, who have reached out after exhausting official means, such as hiring lawyers and trying to file restraining orders.

In his new A&E documentary film, he is contacted by former elementary schoolteacher Rebecca, a cyberbullying victim whose life is turned upside down when nude photos she took almost two decades ago aged 18, resurface.

Rebecca was forced to quit her job in humiliation after a link to her X-rated photos were sent to her fellow colleagues. His mission: to find the perpetrator and get the images removed.

In the documentary, Dr James manages to track down the initial perpetrator who took the photographs and put them online, and a second perpetrator who shared the images on other sites.

Dr James was able to uncover their identities by meticulously digging through their digital footprint and using data aggravator sites.

He explained: ‘So, I always say that everyone has a digital footprint, you just have to find it.

‘I just started to dig, and I knew they would have made just one mistake, somewhere where they would have used a handle that would have something identifying and I would be able to figure out.

‘And, sure enough, I was able to go back to one post that was made in 2005 on a very obscure website. Once I found that handle, it was game over.’

Dr James hopes that his new film will bring attention to just how brutal online harassment can be and how it can implode so many lives.

‘When the system fails victims, I come in and give them that restorative justice that they desperately need and deserve,’ he added.

Bully Hunter premieres Tuesday, September 23 at 10pm ET/PT on A&E.
