There are countless sex positions to keep you busy, but are there are a core three that sexologists would put on top?

The Daily Mail interviewed a sexologist and relationship therapist named Sofie Roos, Dr. Jess O’Reilly, PhD, Lovehoney’s Sexologist, and Zachary Zane, the sex and relationship expert for #LubeLife, to discover their favorite products.

1. Missionary

All three experts agreed that, despite the common assumption missionary is ‘boring’, it is still one of the best and most favored positions.

Sofie explained: ‘Yup – one of the world’s most popular sex positions, and no, this is not a boring one, but actually one of the best and most pleasurable sex positions for both the giver and the receiver!

‘The basics of missionary are easy – it’s simple to have, feels natural and the pleasure is high. But the simplicity is also what makes it so good when it comes to modifying it to make the position suit just what you want.

‘You can put up the feet of the one being under on the other person’s shoulders for a deeper angle, you can use a pillow under the lumbar spine of the receiver to get contact with the g-spot, the penetrator can be hugged by the legs of the one being penetrated, or you can roll over and have the missionary on the side – perfect for lazy Sunday sex!’

She added: ‘Missionary is an awesome sex position for experimenting with different angles until you find something that feels best for you – so be playful!

‘It’s also easy to involve lots of erogenous zones, using your hands or using your tongue on your partner’s ears, lips, throat, or nipples.

‘Also don’t underestimate being close face to face, hearing each other’s breathing and kissing when you can’t resist each other anymore!’

Dr. Jess also chimed in saying, ‘Missionary is far from boring. In fact, for many, it’s a reliable source of pleasure and orgasms.’ 

She gave a suggestion to make the position feel even better. 

‘Try the CAT [Coital Alignment Technique]: the lower partner [on their back] squeezes their legs together while the upper partner slides their body up a little,’ she explained.

Zachary agreed that, ‘Missionary is classic for a reason.’

‘Despite its reputation, it is anything but boring. Eye contact? Kissing? It’s an extremely intimate position for people looking to have a connected sexual and emotional experience with a partner.’

2. Doggy Style 

Doggy style is known to be a fan-favorite.

Sofie called the position ‘an all-time classic.’  

‘It goes without saying that it’s one of the world’s most popular sex positions for a reason,’ she explained. ‘This position is kinky, relatively easy to have, and it feels amazing for both partners because it squeezes tight, and it goes in deep.’

The position also reigns supreme because of the view the giver has, she added.

‘The one penetrating also gets an amazing view and the one receiving has their head slightly down which increases blood flow to the brain – something that can give a nice buzzy feeling making the sex more intense. And you can change angle, depth and rhythm in a variety of ways.’

Sofie also explained that the position is great for ‘power play.’  

‘The one penetrating gets a natural dominant role and the one receiving is submissive, something many enjoy,’ she said. ‘The fact that this position also feels relatively raw makes many people extra turned on!’

Zachary chimed in with similar views.

‘If you like booty [either showing off yours or properly appreciating one], then doggy style is the position for you,’ he said.

3. Cowgirl

By everyone’s consenus, cowgirl came in third. 

‘Cowgirl is one of a few sex positions where the one receiving is in charge, while the giver lays back and take a more passive role,’ Sofie said.

‘This also gives the rider more control, and therefore a higher chance of receiving really great pleasure! The one riding can decide rhythm, angle and depth, making it a great one, especially for women who want to orgasm from penetrative sex since.’

Sofie also gave some advice for making cowgirl even better for the woman on top. 

‘[She can] rub back and forth against her partner for added stimulation instead of going up and down,’ she detailed.

‘This technique is easiest to master if you’re on your feet instead of knees, and taking help from the one penetrating by taking support from their chest, or by them putting their hands around your hips for extra support!’

The position can be varied, she added: ‘[you can] sit in different ways, for example by laying straight, leaning against the wall or by sitting in a chair or on a sofa.’

Zachary agreed, saying: ‘You get a great view of your partner in this position, and it’s also easy to use toys for additional stimulation.’
