LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Billionaire Elon Musk responded on social media to the news of a Tesla Cybertruck exploding in front of President-elect Donald Trump’s Las Vegas hotel on New Year’s Day. One person, the driver, was killed and seven others were injured.

“We have confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck and is unrelated to the vehicle itself. All vehicle telemetry was positive at the time of the explosion, according to the post on Musk’s X account that was sent out around 2:12 p.m. Wednesday.

A few hours earlier, another post on his X account stated “The whole Tesla senior team is investigating this matter right now. Will post more information as soon as we learn anything. We’ve never seen anything like this.”

Musk who owns the social media platform was responding to an image of the Cybertruck in flames that was posted on Musk’s account by another user.

Musk is the CEO of Tesla and the largest owner of the stock. He strongly supported Donald Trump’s run for the presidency and in return, President-elect Trump named him to co-lead a newly created Department of Government Efficiency.

“It’s a Tesla truck and we know that Elon Musk is working with President-elect Trump and it’s the Trump tower so there’s obviously things to be concerned about there,” Sheriff Kevin McMahill said during a news conference.

Two sources close to the investigation told the 8 News Now Investigators that they believe the explosion was an intentional act and not an accident. Video shows the vehicle parked next to the hotel’s front doors as it explodes into flames.

Sheriff McMahill said he had to thank Elon Musk for help with the investigation.

“He gave us quite a bit of additional information into how the vehicle was locked after it exploded due to the nature of the force from the explosion.”

He said Musk was also able to help with capturing all the video from Tesla charging stations around the country and sending it to Metro. According to McMahill, the Cybertruck was rented in Colorado and showed up in Las Vegas Wednesday morning.

Trump’s son, Eric Trump, also posted on X about the explosion.

“Earlier today, a reported electric vehicle fire occurred in the porte cochère of Trump Las Vegas. The safety and well-being of our guests and staff remain our top priority. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Las Vegas Fire Department and local law enforcement for their swift response and professionalism.
