KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two people died in a crash involving street racing in south Kansas City Monday morning. The crash happened near Wornall Road and Carondelet Drive.

“I think it’s tragic. You’ve got to watch out for other people, especially in a busy area like this off of Wornall Road,” said Delora Rialti, who works in Kansas City.

The crash happened just before 10:30 Monday morning when the driver of a Chrysler 300 and the driver of a Dodge Charger were racing southbound on Wornall Road from 99th Street.

The Chrysler struck a Honda, making a left turn from Wornall onto Carondelet.

The person driving the Chrysler was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver and passenger of the Honda, who were not involved in the street race, died at the scene.

“I hope people stop because innocent lives keep getting taken,” said Lexi Symonds, who lives in Kansas City.

This deadly crash happened near the Red Bridge neighborhood in south Kansas City, but street racing has been a concern in neighborhoods across the Kansas City metro for years.

“I live closer to the south Plaza area, and there’s lots of street racing around there constantly, and it’s getting really dangerous. So definitely a concern around the city,” Symonds explained.

“I drive in Kansas City a lot. The people I work with live in Kansas City, so I know that’s important to them because you want to keep everybody safe,” Rialti said.

KCPD has been taking steps toward fighting dangerous street racing and sideshows.

Most recently, the department launched an email where witnesses can make reports and directly access police patrols.

“It happens all over, and it’s just dangerous when you’re out driving, coming home from work or whatever,” Symonds said.

A spokesperson for KCPD says investigators are working with prosecutors to determine applicable charges.
