Community members react to a deadly officer-involved shooting Monday night after police say a man with a rifle threatened a couple trying to help him.
ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla — Community members react after a deadly shooting at Dutton Island Preserve. Police say a 37-year-old man was killed after an encounter with nine Jacksonville officers Monday evening.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the incident began Monday night when a 37-year-old man was seen firing his rifle into the water at the Dutton Island Preserve boat ramp. Authorities say a couple approached to ask if he needed help, but the man pointed the gun at them and fought with one of them when they tried to de-escalate the situation.
Investigators said the suspect then got into his vehicle and drove off, only to return and ram the couple’s car before crashing near the RaceTrac on Mayport Road. Officers say he later barricaded himself inside his own car. After more than an hour, police say the suspect reached into a rifle case, and that’s when nine officers opened fire. The man died from his injuries at the scene.
For people who know the preserve as a quiet spot for fishing and hiking, the violence feels out of place.
“I just think it’s crazy how things escalate so quickly nowadays,” said Justin Null, who often fishes at the preserve.
Community member, Kara Anderson, said she came to the preserve to go on a walk. She said the idea of a shooting there left her uneasy.
“It’s a safe, quiet area. It’s scary to be in an area that it’s even violence or protection is even needed,” Anderson said.
Others were stunned when they first realized what was happening. Longtime visitor Martha Finch said she noticed smoke from the suspect’s truck and thought it was a traffic accident, not a deadly confrontation.
JSO confirmed the man’s past included only minor traffic offenses and a misdemeanor.
Some community members said they will keep coming, but with a new sense of caution.
