DENVER (KDVR) Denver police are looking for a single suspect who may have committed three stabbings Saturday night, leaving a woman dead and two men injured at the 16th Street Mall between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Police first responded to a stabbing incident on 16th Street and Tremont Street at 5:12 p.m. When officers arrived they found one victim with injuries who was transported to the hospital. On Sunday, the agency reported the female victim had died at the hospital on Sunday morning.

Shortly after the first stabbing, police responded to two additional stabbing incidents, one at 16th Street and California Street at about 5:17 p.m. and the second at 16th Street and Lawrence Street at about 5:54 p.m. Police said two additional victims, both adult males, were stabbed and had non-life-threatening injuries. The victim in the California Street incident self-transported to a local hospital, and police initially reported the stabbing occurred at 6:20 p.m.

Denver police said Sunday that they did not believe the suspect and victims were connected, and the motive is unknown. Officers are looking for additional photo or video evidence from the area and are encouraging businesses to check surveillance systems for images of the suspect, which DPD provided an image of Sunday afternoon.

Denver also added additional officers to the area Sunday to ensure an added security presence.

FOX31’s Kasia Kerridge spoke to business owners in the area, who said construction for the 16th Street Mall has increased crime in the area. Shyam Shrestha, of Mt. Everest Imports of Himalaya, said his business opened in 1997 and the construction has caused a loss of almost 80% of his business.

“Crime actually is increasing, due to the construction,” Shrestha said. “Less of a walking area, they block, very isolated area now, no lights … They have not turned on lights so it’s a dark area, lots of homeless people.”

Shrestha said his store has been robbed four or five times in the past two to three years, breaking the business’s front door and stealing jewelry. Shrestha said a cousin was at the store when the stabbing that led to the woman’s death occurred.

“I told him be careful, close the store, just go home,” Shrestha said. “He closed the store, but he told me police came immediately, four or five police cars came, blocked the railway track.”

Akira Haynes, of The Yard Milkshake Bar, said members of the homeless community have begun frequenting the area and sometimes fights have broken out, as well as dumpster fires and drug deals.

“I think it’s kind of always been like this. It’s downtown so it’s kind of always like this,” Haynes said. “That’s kind of crazy … It’s like, I work here so you would think it would be safe a little bit, but again, it’s downtown.”

Anyone with information can report it to the Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7967 or metrodenvercrimestoppers.com.
