JSO Cmdr. Dan Shelton said the two were crossing the road Friday night when a car hit them.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A father and his toddler-aged son are dead after JSO investigators said they were hit by a car while crossing Baymeadows Road Friday night.

JSO Cmdr. Dan Shelton said the crash happened around 8:30 p.m. Friday in the 4000 block of Baymeadows Road.

Shelton said the father, a man described in his mid to late-30s, was carrying his one to two-year-old son across Baymeadows Road when they were hit by a Honda Civic driving east.

JFRD responded, but tragically, both father and son were pronounced dead at the scene, Shelton said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, as well as the families associated with the victims,” Shelton said on behalf of JSO and Sheriff T.K. Waters.

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital as a precaution, Shelton said. He’s cooperating with investigators. Shelton said the driver had no signs of impairment.

Baymeadows Road will be shut down in both directions as investigators learn more about the circumstances leading to the crash.
