No details about what happened have been released. The incident left Jacksonville chef Charles Faggart critically injured; his lawyer said he may not survive.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters has requested for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to assist in investigating an incident in the Duval County Jail that left local chef Charles Faggart critically injured, he wrote in a statement Wednesday.

The FBI will join the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida in investigating what happened. Waters wrote in his statement that the incident is being treated as a “criminal investigation.”

Faggart was injured Monday. His attorney said Wednesday that he was in the hospital with “catastrophic” injuries and may not survive.

During a press conference Tuesday, Waters said nine officers were involved, and all have had their authority stripped until the investigation is over, when a final decision will be made. Their names have not been released.

“Transparency is the foundation of public trust. The public’s confidence in the integrity of the April 7th critical incident investigation and in our agency’s commitment to transparency is of paramount concern to me,” Waters said in a statement on his decision to involve the FBI.

He says there is no other information that can be shared. Faggart’s family does not know what happened to him, according to their attorney.

Faggart is the the owner and chef for a popular Jacksonville catering company and food truck, Chop It Charlie’s.

His family has posted a GoFundMe to assist with “mounting medical expenses and provide support” for Charles’s son Lincoln.

“Charles has always been known for his big heart, his flavorful food, and the joy he brought to others. Now, we are asking the community he gave so much to — to give back,” they wrote on the GoFundMe page.
