The incident occurred approximately 4.5 miles from the location where an immigration officer previously shot Renee Good on January 7, as she attempted to drive away.
MINNEAPOLIS — A federal officer discharged his weapon, injuring an individual in the leg, during an altercation in Minneapolis. The officer was reportedly attacked with a shovel and broom handle while trying to execute an arrest on Wednesday evening, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Following the shooting, both the officer and the individual involved were hospitalized, and two additional people were taken into custody, as reported by the agency.
The DHS stated that federal law enforcement agents had initiated a “targeted traffic stop” around 6:50 p.m. local time. The operation focused on a man, identified as a Venezuelan national allegedly residing in the U.S. without legal authorization.
According to the report, the suspect attempted to flee the scene, crashing into a parked vehicle before abandoning the car and attempting to escape on foot. The officer pursued and tried to apprehend the man, who allegedly resisted and violently assaulted the officer.
The press release said two people came out of a nearby apartment and attacked the officer with a shovel and broom. The officer then shot the man originally being chased in the leg. The city of Minneapolis said he has “apparent non-life-threatening injuries.”
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said, in a Wednesday evening press conference, there is a broom and snow shovel on scene and “at least one person may have assaulted” an officer. He requested the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to investigate.
The officer then shot the man originally being chased in the leg. O’Hara said the man had non-life-threatening injuries, but didn’t have an update on the officer’s condition.
“Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired defensive shots to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg,” DHS said in the statement.
The three people hid in an apartment and the two who allegedly attacked the officer were later taken into custody while the person who was shot and the officer were hospitalized, according to Homeland Security. It’s unclear when that happened.
“There’s still a lot we don’t know at this time,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in a press conference late Wednesday evening.
He accused ICE and border patrol agents of “creating chaos.”
He urged people to go home if they’re going to be “taking the bait” and not peacefully protesting.
The shooting took place about 4.5 miles north of where an immigration agent fatally shot Renee Good in the head on Jan. 7 as she drove away.
A large group of federal agents and Minneapolis Police wearing gas masks fired tear gas into a crowd gathered at a north Minneapolis intersection near where Wednesday’s shooting took place.
O’Hara urged protestors to leave the area and called actions happening on the street, like throwing rocks or lighting fireworks, illegal. He said the group is now an “unlawful assembly.”
“It is well past the line and people need to leave,” O’Hara said.
The city of Minneapolis said on the social media platform X that, “The City of Minneapolis again demands that ICE leave the city and state immediately. We stand by our immigrant and refugee communities – know that you have our full support.”
