In Central Oregon, the air was thick with ash as emergency sirens resonated across the landscape. This followed a ferocious lightning assault that violently struck the area, sparking no fewer than 35 wildfires within mere hours.
A fierce thunderstorm discharged nearly 2,000 lightning bolts by the evening hours on Wednesday. These strikes battered forests, rangelands, and individual trees, stretching firefighter resources to their limit in the face of multiple emergent fires, as highlighted by Central Oregon Fire Information.
Although some sections of the region experienced intense rain showers, these downpours were far too scattered to curb the overwhelming spread of fires triggered by the relentless lightning activity.
Fire officials issued warnings about the likelihood of additional fires cropping up in the near future. This stems from the fact that trees and vegetation struck by lightning might smolder inconspicuously before bursting into flames.
Among the initial serious incidents was a wildfire igniting approximately three miles northeast of Terrebonne, situated on the north side of the Crooked River and east of Smith Rock State Park.
The fire was mapped at 19.4 acres before firefighters stopped its forward spread.
The Dickerson Fire, about 6 miles southwest of Brothers, grew beyond its initial estimates before crews fully contained it.
The biggest threat remains the wind-driven Akawa Butte Fire, which had exploded to 26,144 acres and triggered Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation orders near Sisters.
The newly reported Ten Mile Fire near Madras had also grown to roughly 800 acres as firefighters continue battling flames across the region.
Officials say the danger is far from over.
The storm followed another lightning event last week that produced holdover fires, blazes that can smolder unnoticed for days before suddenly flaring to life.
