A 13-year-old boy has been named as one of the 17 victims injured during a shooting incident by Robin Westman, described as a transgender shooter, at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning.
Endre Gunter was struck in the stomach when Westman, who identifies as a transgender woman, fired multiple shots through the church’s stained-glass windows during a morning Mass celebrating the return to school, surrounded by children at approximately 8:30 a.m., according to his mother in a statement to CNN.
“Our son was shot at school today, inside a church praying with his classmates,” his mother, Danielle, told the outlet.
She added that the young teen underwent surgery and is now recovering.
The distraught parent expressed gratitude towards a courageous Minneapolis police officer who quickly attended to their wounded eighth-grade son, provided first aid, and offered a prayer with the boy after he was hit.
“He said the officer rendered aid, hugged him, reassured him, and prayed with him before getting into the ambulance,” Endre’s mother said in the statement.
The family is now focused on helping the traumatized boy “rebuild his life, his trust, and his confidence.”
“We pray that everyone touched by this tragedy can find the strength to begin rebuilding too,” she said.
Two children, ages 8 and 10, were killed in the bloodshed.
The horror left 17 injured, including 14 children between the ages of 6 and 15, and three elderly parishioners in their 80s, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said.
The victims, who sustained a range of injuries in the gunfire, are all expected to survive.
Westman, 23, was found dead at the harrowing scene with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
