Authorities have reported a disturbing case of animal neglect at a supposed rescue operation in Citrus County, Florida. The owner of the facility, called Hess Haven, was taken into custody on Monday following the discovery of multiple deceased animals on the premises.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about potential animal neglect at a residence located on East Oak Court in Floral City. Upon their arrival, deputies uncovered a grim scene: several dead cats were found stowed in trash bags, a deceased dog was locked inside a transport carrier, and three dead birds were discovered in a chicken coop.
Inside the residence, conditions were equally distressing. Deputies found one dog and nine cats living amid litter boxes that were overflowing with feces. Additionally, an exterior shed on the property contained 12 cats that appeared to have been deprived of food and water, according to the sheriff’s office.
In total, 43 animals were rescued from the site and have been transported to Citrus County Animal Services. The animals are currently receiving medical evaluations and care to ensure their well-being following the ordeal.
An exterior shed housed 12 additional cats that had no access to food or water, according to the sheriff’s office. In total, 43 animals were removed from the property and taken to Citrus County Animal Services for medical evaluation and care.

The owner, Jordyn Hess, 24, was taken to the Citrus County Detention Facility and has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty and animal cruelty, deputies say.
“No matter how many cases you work, you never get used to seeing animals living and dying in conditions like these,” Deputy Gallant said in a statement. “These animals were living in conditions no creatures should ever endure, and getting them out while holding someone accountable was our absolute priority.”
CCSO is also reminding residents to thoroughly research and verify the legitimacy of any rescue organization before donating money, supplies or animals.Â
