Police arrested a Florida man after finding a box with two severed cat heads on a mailbox in Bonita Springs.
BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — A man was arrested in Florida Thursday after a box of two severed cat heads were found on top of someone’s mailbox in Bonita Springs.
According to a social media post by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, a resident on Carnoustie Court called police after finding a box on top of their mailbox that contained two severed cat heads.
Detectives responded to the scene along with the Lee County animal cruelty task force. After searching the area, detectives identified 37-year-old Robert James Luther III as a suspect.
The sheriff’s office said its investigators were able to determine that Luther was in the area of the crime around the time it was committed.
Luther was located later that day fishing behind a closed business near Corporation Circle. The sheriff’s office said Luther “invoked his rights” when he was questioned about the discovery.
The sheriff’s office obtained a search warrant that resulted in the discovery of “disturbing” cell phone videos that depicted the deceased cats, the post said.
Luther was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated animal cruelty. He was also charged with two counts of aggravated stalking.
“Heinous violent acts, especially toward innocent animals, is beyond unacceptable and any offender will face severe consequences to the fullest extent of the law,” Sheriff Carmine Marceno said.
