The parents of twin four-year-old boys are now facing legal action after the young children reportedly injured themselves with a gun that was not properly secured in their Florida residence, authorities have stated.

Police have taken 39-year-old Keishara Goodrum into custody, charging her with two counts of child neglect resulting in significant harm. Meanwhile, Maurice Bright, 40, has been apprehended for illegal possession of a firearm, given his status as a convicted felon.

According to an emailed statement from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office to Fox News Digital, the injured twins were taken to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital. They are receiving ongoing treatment and remain in critical yet stable condition.

Law enforcement officers initially responded to AdventHealth East Orlando hospital following reports that two four-year-old boys, suffering from gunshot injuries, had been brought in by their parents.

The parents told deputies that they did not witness the incident, but both heard a loud “pop” inside their home, according to the arrest affidavit.

Goodrum said she was in the kitchen making breakfast for her and her five children, and Bright was on the back porch cooking on the grill when the incident unfolded.

Goodrum told deputies that she had been drinking the night before and the twins may have gotten access to the gun because she forgot to secure it after leaving it under a couch cushion.
