High schoolers can use phones before and after school, at lunch and between classes. Exceptions may be made for medical or learning needs.

FLORIDA, USA — Statewide, students will see a new cellphone policy. Phones are not allowed for elementary and middle school students during the school day.

High schoolers can use phones before and after school, at lunch and between classes. Exceptions may be made for medical or learning needs.

“Limiting the distractions throughout the instruction is super important and I feel like it will just give the kids a better chance of being in the moment in school and being able to take in everything that’s being dished out.” Darrian Skinner, a local parent and teacher, said.

Also new this year, high school athletes must get a heart screening before participating in any sports. It must be done by the next school year.

Paula Golson is the audiology director with Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. She recognizes the value of all screenings.

“Screenings are important to make sure that your child is successful in school,” Golson said.

There have been several instances where automated external defibrillators were needed in schools for athletes in need of life-saving help. Now, schools must now have a cardiac emergency plan and teach first aid in middle school P.E. class.
