In a highly anticipated political race, State Representative Angie Nixon (D-Jacksonville) has officially declared her intention to challenge current Senator Ashley Moody for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Moody, who has a track record as Florida’s attorney general, was appointed to the Senate by Governor Ron DeSantis in 2025.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — After dedicating five years to representing the Jacksonville area, Angie Nixon announced on Thursday morning that she is entering the race for the U.S. Senate. This comes as a significant move for the Democrat who aims to bring change to the state’s leadership.

In an official statement released to First Coast News, Nixon shared her motivation for running, highlighting the pressing affordability crisis that she believes has been neglected by Florida’s current leadership for too long.

Nixon’s opponent, Ashley Moody, who was appointed to the Senate by Governor Ron DeSantis to fill the vacancy created when Marcio Rubio became U.S. Secretary of State, will face a fierce contest. Moody’s earlier role as state attorney general has been significant in her political career.

“Throughout my state listening tour in recent months, I’ve spoken with Republicans, Independents, and Democrats alike, and they’ve all voiced the same concern: the current trajectory is unsustainable,” Nixon stated. “Yet, establishment figures like Ashley Moody remain disconnected from these realities. The costs of everyday necessities—such as groceries, healthcare, and childcare—are skyrocketing. Property insurance has doubled within four years, and escalating housing expenses are displacing Floridians from their hometowns. This is not a partisan issue. We must address this affordability crisis, and Floridians need a Senator who is committed to enhancing the lives of all, not just catering to wealthy elites.”

Nixon, whose campaign is headquartered in Jacksonville, said she will spend the coming weeks traveling around Florida talking to voters about their concerns.
