The future of the USA men’s soccer team in the 2026 World Cup could very well rest on the talents of their star striker, Folarin Balogun. His impressive performance in the opening match against Paraguay on June 12, where he netted multiple goals, has set high expectations for his contributions to Team USA.
Interestingly, Balogun’s eligibility to play for the USA was never anticipated. His journey to becoming a key player for the team is an unexpected one, rooted in a serendipitous twist of fate.
Balogun’s story begins with his mother, Florence, who was visiting her sister-in-law in Brooklyn, New York, while she was seven months pregnant. Florence, along with Folarin’s father, Ben, who were both Nigerian nationals residing in London, had planned for a short visit to the United States before returning to England for the birth of their child.
However, their plans took an unforeseen turn. As Florence prepared to head back to London, she faced a travel hiccup. The airline required a doctor’s note from her physician in London, confirming it was safe for her to fly. Unfortunately, she couldn’t obtain the necessary documentation in time.
As a result, Florence remained in New York, where she gave birth to Folarin on July 3, 2001. This unexpected event not only marked the beginning of Balogun’s life in the United States but also laid the foundation for his future in American soccer. By the end of August, Florence and her newborn returned to London, but the circumstances of his birth had already opened the door for Folarin’s eventual role in Team USA.
Therefore, Folarin (who grew up in England) had the option to play internationally for England, the United States and Nigeria.
His ultimate decision to commit to the USA came after longtime U.S. men’s team standouts Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Tim Weah all went to Monaco (where Balogun plays his club soccer) to recruit him.
Their attempt was clearly a success, as Balogun is now balling out for Team USA in the 2026 World Cup. But his mother staying in the USA to give birth to him back in 2001 is what made this decision possible.
