NEW YORK (AP) — Ford has announced two significant recalls in the United States, affecting nearly 1.74 million vehicles, due to software issues with the rearview camera displays.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released notices this week detailing concerns that certain Ford models are experiencing. The infotainment system in 2021-2026 Ford Broncos and 2021-2024 Ford Edges might overheat, causing the system to shut down and the rearview camera to stop working when the vehicle is in reverse. Meanwhile, some 2020-2022 Ford Escapes, Lincoln Corsairs, and 2020-2024 Lincoln Aviators and Explorers could display an inverted image on their rearview cameras.
The recalls cover 849,310 units of Broncos and Edges, alongside 889,950 units of Escapes, Corsairs, Aviators, and Explorers. Ford has acknowledged that these defects affect all of the recalled vehicles. However, the company reports no known injuries or accidents linked to these issues, according to the NHTSA documents.
The NHTSA cautions that these malfunctions could increase the risk of collisions.
Ford is addressing the issue for Bronco and Edge owners by providing a complimentary software update for the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM). Owners will receive notification letters by the end of the month, and they can get the update done at a dealership or via an over-the-air update.
But a remedy is still under development for the recall impacting the Escapes, Corsairs, Aviators and Explorers, this week’s recall announcement noted. In the meantime, interim letters to notify owners of the safety risks are set to be mailed out in the coming months.
For more information, drivers can visit the NHTSA website and Ford’s online recall lookup using their vehicle’s VIN number, or call the company’s customer service line at 1-866-436-7332.
