Ex-Cowboys star Michael Gallup plans on making NFL comeback

Michael Gallup’s NFL retirement might not be lasting all that long after all.

Gallup, who retired before the 2024 NFL season, plans on making a comeback in the league, NFL Network reported Friday.

Last April, the wide receiver signed with the Raiders on a one-year contract with the intentions of competing for the third wideout spot.

He worked out at OTAs and minicamp, but in July, he decided to ultimately hang up his spikes.

The move shocked the team.

“I was completely caught off guard by it,” former Raiders general manager Tom Telesco shared with The Athletic last year. “It was unexpected. When I spoke with him, he seemed certain about his decision. He was prepared to move forward. It’s unfortunate.”

Gallup, at 29, could be an interesting option as free agency starts next week.

Drafted in the third round by Dallas in 2018, the Colorado State alum made a splash in his second NFL season, recording a career-best 1,107 yards on 66 receptions.

Unfortunately, after sustaining a left ACL tear during the 2021 season, Gallup struggled to replicate his earlier success, failing to reach 450 yards in each of his last three playing seasons.

Gallup still inked a five-year, $57.5 million contract in 2022 but was ultimately released by Dallas in 2024.

He finished with 266 receptions for 3,744 yards across 86 games with the Cowboys.
