Zohran Mamdani achieved a historic milestone on Tuesday night, marking a momentous occasion in several ways.

At 34, Mamdani has become the youngest mayor of New York City in a century, and notably, he is the first mayor to have met his spouse through a dating app.

Upon securing his victory early in the evening, Mamdani was joined by his wife, Rama Duwaji, 28, whom he met on the dating platform Hinge in 2021. The couple celebrated their marriage earlier this year.

During his acceptance speech, the democratic socialist didn’t hold back his criticism of President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, many women took to social media to express their regrets about missing the opportunity to connect with Mamdani when they could have.

In response to a TikTok video featuring a Halloween costume inspired by Mamdani’s former dating profile, numerous users shared their personal anecdotes about encounters with New York City’s newly elected mayor.

‘I matched with him and ignored his message,’ one annoyed Hinge user wrote.

‘Didn’t reply because I thought he was unemployed,’ laughed another.

Others were frustrated at having seemingly missed out, as one wrote in despair: ‘You mean when I was living in NYC?? In the middle of the pandemic?? Chronically on Hinge????’

‘Fumble of a generation,’ declared someone else of their apparent failed encounter.

Mamdani matched with the Brooklyn-based artist on the app just months after Duwaji, then 24, had moved to New York from Dubai.

During his campaign, Mamdani provided some insight into his personal life, including how he met his wife.

While appearing on The Bulwark podcast, he cheekily told those looking for love that they should not dismiss online dating, saying: ‘I met my wife on Hinge so there is still hope on those dating apps.’

The couple announced their engagement in October last year and said ‘I do’ at City Hall in Lower Manhattan in February.

They also celebrated their nuptials overseas, with an engagement party and an Islamic wedding, known as a Nikkah ceremony, held in Dubai in December 2024.

On Tuesday night, Mamdani defeated former New York state governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a race that saw him take more than 50 percent of the vote to become New York’s youngest mayor since 1892, as well as the first Muslim mayor.

While voters were celebrating Mamdani’s win, his wife – who is set to be the youngest mayoral first lady of New York City – stole the show in her elegant all-black outfit.

Mamdani told supporters in Brooklyn last night: ‘I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist.

‘And most damning of all, I refuse to apologize for any of this.’

He directly addressed the President: ‘Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up!’

In his ferocious speech promising a ‘new dawn’ for New York, he quoted late socialist politician Eugene Debs, bragged about ‘toppling a political dynasty’ and launched into a blistering attack against Trump, who has called Mamdani a ‘communist.’

‘If any city can show a nation how to stop Donald Trump, it is the city that gave rise to him,’ said Mamdani, who represents a district in the same borough of Queens where the President was raised.
