GOP split on Iran 'overstated': Former Minnesota governor

() Former GOP Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty says the split in the Republican Party over whether or not the United States should take action on Iran is “overstated.”

“There’s polling out that shows an overwhelming majority of Republican voters support stopping Iran from getting a nuclear weapon,” Pawlenty said. “There’s anecdotal and important voices that are heard, but within the Republican Party in terms of their isolationist views, they’re a distinct minority.”

Fighting between Israel and Iran continued Thursday after Iran launched missiles that hit an Israeli hospital. The strike left more than 200 people wounded.

Since the fighting began, President Donald Trump has called for Iran to make an “unconditional surrender,” while Iran has warned that if the U.S. steps in, there would be “irreparable damage” done. Pawlenty said U.S. action would not be misguided because of Iran’s views on the United States.

“I think people who think like that are not thinking clearly, and history shows isolationism is a losing formula for the United States,” Pawlenty said.

According to the White House, Trump is expected to make a decision on Iran within the next two weeks. He reportedly reviewed attack plans on Iran earlier this week.
