The Washington Commanders have strategically bolstered their offensive lineup amid a spate of injuries plaguing their receiving crew.
In a timely move, the Commanders have signed Treylon Burks, a former first-round draft pick for the Tennessee Titans. This decision comes as the team gears up for a crucial NFC East clash against the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday.
The urgency behind this acquisition is underscored by the uncertain status of star receiver Terry McLaurin. McLaurin, who has been on the sidelines for the past three games, saw his practice participation downgraded this week. While he managed a limited session on Wednesday, he was absent from Thursday’s practice due to a lingering quad injury.
With McLaurin’s availability for the Week 7 away game hanging in the balance, Washington faces an acute need for dynamic playmakers to step up in the receiving department.
Burks is initially set to join the practice squad, but his presence is anticipated to be a swift addition to the active roster, given the Commanders’ pressing requirement for fit and ready players.
Burks, drafted No. 18 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft from Arkansas, has been a massive disappointment in the league, failing to make a mark while playing for the Titans.
Prior to the draft, though, Burks received comparisons to Julio Jones and Dez Bryant.
The Philadelphia Eagles initially held the No. 18 pick in that draft, but they traded that pick and the 101st overall pick for AJ Brown, who was due a contract extension.
The Titans instead opted to reset their room and used the 18th pick to draft Burks.
Burks had just 444 receiving yards and one touchdown as a rookie in 11 games played before falling completely out of favor.
Quarterbacks Ryan Tannehill and Will Levis combined to throw for 3,424 yards, 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions during a 6-11 campaign in 2023.
DeAndre Hopkins led the team in receiving yards with 1,057 yards, while Burks had just 221 yards in his sophomore season.
He appeared in just five games last year before suffering a season-ending ACL tear.

Burks was then waived earlier this month after suffering a fracture collarbone in July, with the Titans previously declining his fifth-year option.
If McLaurin doesn’t go, it will be expected that their receiving corps will be some combination of Deebo Samuel, Luke McCaffrey, Chris Moore and perhaps Burks.
Moore previously usurped Burks in the pecking order in Tennessee during the 2023 season.
