Pvt. Gabriel J. Perez of Anchorage, Alaska, has been identified as the soldier who died during training at Fort Jackson on April 24.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Army has identified a soldier who was found dead on April 24 during training at Fort Jackson.

In a statement on Friday, a spokesperson for the Army post announced that the deceased was Pvt. Gabriel J. Perez from Anchorage, Alaska. Perez was a basic combat training soldier from Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment. The Army didn’t provide any additional information regarding how the soldier died, but said an investigation is underway.

Perez’s next of kin has been notified of his death. Maj. Gen. Daryl O. Hood, Fort Jackson’s commander, said resources were being provided to Perez’s family and teammates.

“We encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out for help,” Hood said.

Perez’s unit conducted a 48-hour stand-down after his death.
