The Liberty have secured a continuation of their partnership with WNYW Fox 5 New York, solidifying the network as the official TV partner for the reigning WNBA champions as the new season approaches in just over two months.
This multi-year extension of the partnership was announced on Thursday, guaranteeing that Liberty games will remain accessible to more than 7.5 million households in the tri-state area.
The Liberty made history last season when they became the first women’s professional sports team to ink a Fox 5 distribution deal.
Last season, the Liberty enjoyed a surge in local TV viewership, with a noteworthy 129 percent year-over-year increase, thanks to a total of 23 local TV games broadcasted between Fox 5 and its affiliate station, WWOR My9.
The obvious success prompted Fox 5 to increase its investment for the Liberty’s 2025 title chase and beyond.
That includes plans to launch a new weekly show centered on the Liberty’s title pursuit.
The program is expected to include game highlights, feature segments and interviews with players.
The extension also keeps locally televised Liberty games on Fox 5 and My9 for the foreseeable future. Local games are also expected to be streamed on the Fox Local App.
Terms of the agreement, including length and the deal’s monetary value, were not disclosed.
Liberty CEO Keia Clarke said this partnership “plays an integral role in extending our reach.
“We are excited to call such a significant platform our local TV home for years to come and new Liberty-dedicated programming will increase fan accessibility while also elevating our brand and driving business growth for both our franchise and women’s sports at large,” Clarke said in a statement.
Lew Leone, senior vice president and general manager of WNYW Fox 5 and My9, shared Clarke’s excitement for their continued partnership.
“We have a powerhouse lineup of sports programming, and extending our partnership with the Liberty offers a full-court press to bring fans even more coverage, more access, and more thrilling WNBA moments,” Leone said in a statement.
The Liberty are also expected to have several games featured on the WNBA’s national broadcast partners platforms — including ABC, CBS, CBSN, ESPN, Ion, NBA TV and Prime Video.
Specifics on those national TV games are expected to be released at a later date.
The Liberty are scheduled to open their 2025 season May 17 against the Las Vegas Aces at Barclays Center.
