CHICAGO (WLS) — Amid spirited cheers, lively music, and a special visit from Mickey Mouse, families enjoyed a joyful gathering at “Let’s Play Sports!” This complimentary community event was designed to introduce young kids to the exciting world of sports and physical activities.

In collaboration with Disney Jr. and ESPN, along with the Chicago Park District and ABC7 Chicago, the event opened its doors to children aged 3 to 7. They had the chance to explore sports like soccer, boxing, baseball, and gymnastics in an encouraging environment.

Taking place from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the ComEd Recreational Center located at 1434 S. Loomis St., the event brought together community members on Chicago’s Near West Side.

The organizers shared their aspiration to ignite happiness, bolster kids’ confidence, and guide families on how to engage with youth sports programs.

Lisa Vasquez, who serves as the senior manager of Disney Entertainment Corporate Social Responsibility, remarked that the day perfectly exemplified the inspiration that the company seeks to spread.

“Days like this are everything-its the reason I do this job for Disney- its really about taking the best of all that we have at Walt Disney, and igniting and inspiring and bringing joy to kids,” she said.

Parents said the chance to get kids moving, and off screens, was a major draw.

“It brings out some athleticism in them. Some kids like to hide behind iPad or a phone. To have them active, it’s great for them,” said dad Deshaun Dotson.

Vasquez added that the event helps families understand how to get started.
