Florida State University President Richard McCullough shared the news on his X page.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State University President Richard McCullough says the school will be reopening its Student Union from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, just a little over a week after a 20-year-old student opened fire in that area.

That shooting left two people dead and hospitalized several others. The president added that a moment of reflection will take place at 3 p.m. Monday before the Union reopens.

In an X post, McCullough said staff made the decision “after careful consideration and listening to our students.”

“We understand the importance of the Student Union as a hub for connection, support, learning, and growth,” McCullough stated. “It is crucial that we continue to offer students the services, opportunities, and communal space that foster their development and well-being.”

McCullough said those who aren’t ready to return to the Student Union “can return when they are ready.”

“Everyone will heal at their own pace and feel differently about being in that space,” the president said. “We will announce additional operating hours this week.”
