() A few Southern California schools reopened Monday, while others remain closed and are serving as emergency supply pickup points, California’s state superintendent of public instruction, Tony Thurmond, said Monday on “ Now.”

Thurmond said schools will prioritize student safety during the deadly wildfires even if it means losing some instructional days.

“We’re going to guarantee funding for our schools because this is a tragedy, and they could not prevent it,” Thurmond said. “If they can make up the time, we want them to make up the time.”

“But we don’t want a fear of losing revenue to be the reason that a school stays open in a time that’s not safe,” he added.

“Conditions have improved for a majority of areas across the Los Angeles region and the District is confident it is safe for students and employees to return to campuses,” the Los Angeles Unified School District said in a statement.

Schools remaining closed because of mandatory evacuation orders are Canyon Charter Elementary, Kenter Canyon Charter Elementary, Palisades Charter Elementary, Marquez Charter Elementary, Topanga Charter Elementary, Lanai Road Elementary and Paul Revere Middle School.
