In a troubling incident in the Florida Keys, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is actively investigating the shooting of a crocodile with a spear. The incident took place in Key Largo, Monroe County, where an eight-foot American crocodile was discovered with a spear lodged in its head.

Efforts to aid the injured reptile have proven challenging. Despite attempts by FWC officers and wildlife experts from Zoo Miami, capturing the crocodile to administer necessary treatment was not successful. The situation remains critical as authorities continue their search for both the perpetrator and the crocodile.

The public is being urged to remember the protected status of American crocodiles. These creatures are listed as federally threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, making any act of killing or harassment a violation of both state and federal law. The severity of this act underscores the need for increased awareness and protection of these vulnerable animals.

FWC officers and other wildlife professionals from Zoo Miami tried to capture the crocodile to provide treatment, but were unsuccessful.

Authorities are reminding the public that American crocodiles are listed as a federally threatened species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and it is illegal to kill or harass them under state and federal law.

FWC is continuing to monitor the situation and is looking for more information about this incident.

Anyone with photos, videos or information is asked to contact the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922. Reports can be made anonymously, and tips that lead to an arrest or citation may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
