Texas Dems set to return home amid California's redistricting call

() California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s chances at becoming the 2028 Democratic nominee are increasing, at least according to prediction market site Kalshi.

Newsom’s odds of representing Democrats on the next presidential ballot spiked over the last three days, rising to 27%.

Kalshi calculates odds based on contacts in the prediction market and Newsom’s are now at the top, with some distance between himself and other possible nominees.

Newsom has been in the news recently amid a redistricting battle that began in Texas and has moved nationwide.

Republican states have said they will redraw district lines mid-decade, an effort led by President Donald Trump to increase the odds that Republicans remain in control of Congress by creating more safe districts for conservatives and disrupting heavily Democratic areas.

Texas Democrats left the state to prevent a quorum and delay the vote, sheltering in blue states. Democratic governors, including Newsom, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, have all suggested they will redraw their own lines to balance out GOP tactics.

Newsom is the only one of the three to see a dramatic rise in his odds, which are set at 27%. He’s followed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, with a 13% chance, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg with 9% and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who has a 5% of becoming the nominee, based on current data.

For the Republican nominee, Vice President JD Vance leads with 55% odds on Kalshi.
