The Giants swung for the fences — and settled for a sacrifice fly.
After unsuccessful attempts to acquire Matt Stafford and secure a commitment from Aaron Rodgers, the Giants found their Super Bowl-winning quarterback by signing Russell Wilson. Wilson will serve as their temporary starter under a one-year contract valued at up to $21 million, with $10.5 million guaranteed.
By adding the 36-year-old veteran and recently signing Jameis Winston to a two-year, $8 million contract, the Giants have not ruled out selecting a franchise quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft, where they possess the No. 3 pick.
Last year, Wilson expressed interest in joining New York and held discussions with the Giants, though he declined to act as Daniel Jones’ backup. Instead, Wilson opted to sign with Pittsburgh, where he had 11 inconsistent starts, recording 16 touchdowns and five interceptions while losing his last five games, which included a playoff loss in Baltimore.
