GM Issues Recall for Over 270,000 U.S. Vehicles Due to Rearview Camera Concerns

General Motors has announced a recall affecting over 270,000 vehicles in the United States due to an issue with their rearview cameras.

According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), certain Chevrolet Malibu models from 2023 to 2025 might have cameras that display either blank or distorted images, presenting a potential hazard to drivers.

The safety notice highlights that an incorrect rearview image can significantly limit the driver’s visibility behind the car, thereby heightening the risk of an accident.

The recall report indicates that approximately 6% of the vehicles involved actually have defective cameras. The problem stems from Sharp Electronics, GM’s camera supplier, which discovered a flaw in the bonding process used for constructing the camera housing. This flaw could compromise the adhesive material in some assemblies.

Additionally, GM identified that the way the Sharp camera is mounted on the Chevrolet Malibu might allow moisture to infiltrate the housing. Despite this issue, the automaker reported no known crashes or injuries related to the defect.

GM will mail letters to owners of potentially affected vehicles on May 18, according to NHTSA. Owners can bring their cars to GM dealerships, which will replace the rearview cameras free of charge.
