Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her confidence on Saturday that Jessica Tisch will continue in her role as NYPD commissioner under the leadership of New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
“I don’t want to speak on her behalf, but I wouldn’t be here suggesting she’ll be the next commissioner if I didn’t believe it,” Hochul remarked to journalists at the SOMOS political retreat in Puerto Rico. This comment came in response to inquiries about whether she’s urging Tisch to serve under the socialist Mamdani.
On Wednesday, Mamdani reaffirmed his campaign promise to retain Tisch once he assumes office in January, commending her efforts to eradicate “incompetence and corruption” linked to Mayor Eric Adams’ associates within the Police Department.
Influential figures in New York, including Hochul, Kathy Wylde—who leads the pro-business Partnership for New York City—and House Majority Speaker Hakeem Jeffries (D-Brooklyn), have both publicly and privately advocated for Mamdani to keep Tisch as commissioner, as reported by The Post.
According to insiders, they believe this decision would help alleviate concerns that the city might regress on crime control under a socialist administration.
Mandani’s reps did not return messages.
