Carnival Cruise Lines confirmed the Elation passenger was one of two people who drowned in separate incidents at Celebration Key in the Bahamas Friday.

THE BAHAMAS, — A passenger aboard the Carnival Elation, which departed from the JAXPORT Cruise Terminal Thursday for a four-night cruise, drowned in the Bahamas Friday, according to a news release from the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

The cruise line confirmed the passenger was sailing aboard the Elation, and was one of two passengers reported drowned Friday in separate incidents on Celebration Key, Carnival’s private island in the Bahamas.

Carnival said the second passenger was sailing aboard the Mardi Gras, which left Port Canaveral August 9 on a seven-night cruise.

Royal Bahamas Police said one passenger, a 79-year-old American man, was found unresponsive shortly after noon Friday. A lifeguard pulled him from the water and administered CPR, but he was pronounced dead. Police said he was snorkeling at a beach on Celebration Key when he became unresponsive.

A second passenger, a 74-year-old American woman, was found unresponsive around 2:30 p.m. Friday in a swimming pool. She was pulled from the water and given CPR, but she was also pronounced dead.

Police said they are still investigating the circumstances leading to their deaths.

Carnival did not specify which passenger was aboard Elation, and which was aboard Mardi Gras. In a statement to ABC News, they said they are cooperating with law enforcement, and are saddened by the losses.

“Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate emergency incidents at Celebration Key on Friday — one in the lagoon and one at the beach. Sadly, both guests have passed away. One guest was sailing with family on Mardi Gras and one guest was sailing with family on Carnival Elation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families and our Care Team is providing assistance.”
