When is Inauguration Day?

Every four years, a president takes the oath and is sworn into office on Jan. 20 at noon local time.

Inauguration Day has taken place on the same day and time since the inauguration of Franklin D. Roosevelt to his second term in 1937, according to the Library of Congress. The 20th Amendment moved the day from March 4 to Jan. 20.

What is the Inauguration Day schedule?

By tradition, a procession to the Capitol will kick off the events.

President Joe Biden, President-elect Trump and their spouses will travel to the White House, escorted by members of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC). The two presidents will meet briefly and then proceed to the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremonies.

Vance will be sworn in first, followed by Trump.

The chief justice of the Supreme Court will deliver the oath to Trump, who will subsequently give his inaugural address.

Every president since George Washington has delivered an inaugural address, according to the JCCIC.

After the ceremonies, outgoing President Biden and first lady Jill Biden will depart the Capitol by plane.

In his first official acts in office, Trump will gather with aides and members of Congress in the President’s Room to sign nominations and possibly some memorandums, proclamations or executive orders.

Finally, the president and vice president will make their way to the east front steps of the Capitol where they review the military troops, who will then lead a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House. The procession will include ceremonial military regiments, citizens’ groups, marching bands and floats.

Trump said he would hold a “victory rally” in D.C. the day before at Capital One Arena, according to an announcement from his inauguration committee.

What are the security plans for Inauguration Day?

The U.S. Secret Service will lead the security operations for Inauguration Day, with assistance from the Department of Homeland Security and other federal and state law enforcement agencies.

Security plans have typically included security fencing, barricades, K-9 teams and other security technology, according to the Congressional Research Service. Officers are divided into specialized teams.

Who will attend Trump’s inauguration?

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni is expected to attend, according to the Associated Press, along with Japan’s foreign minister, according to Reuters.

Right-wing world leaders who were invited and may or may not attend include: Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, Argentinian President Javier Milei, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, French politician Eric Zemmour.

A Trump spokesperson confirmed to NBC that Chinese President Xi Jinping received an invitation but is reportedly unlikely to accept.

“Inviting heads of state to Inauguration Day is something new under the sun,” said Thomas Balcerski, a presidential historian at Eastern Connecticut State University, to the Miami Herald.
