OLYMPIA, Wash. (WJW) – A Washington state handyman faces murder charges after a missing elderly woman’s body was found buried underneath a shed earlier this month.

Jeffrey Zizz is charged with murder, kidnapping and unlawful disposal of human remains for the death of 82-year-old Marcia Norman, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office announced in a Facebook post on Sunday afternoon.

Detectives started investigating Norman’s disappearance on April 4.

Family members told law enforcement they hadn’t heard from Norman since April 1, but both of her vehicles were still parked outside of her residence in Tenino, Washington.

Deputies then responded to the home and quickly determined that the circumstances surrounding her disappearance were suspicious, investigators said.

“The condition of the house suggested Marcia may have left abruptly–household tasks such as dishes appeared to have been left mid-process,” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook.

Through the investigation, detectives learned that Norman had dinner with her handyman, Zizz, the evening she went missing, the sheriff’s office said. Investigators believed he was the last person to have seen Norman, and he was named a person of interest in the case.

According to the sheriff’s office, detectives determined that Zizz built a shed on another property in Olympia, Washington, the day after Norman went missing.

On April 9, law enforcement used power equipment to move the shed and excavate underneath it. Detectives found human remains “buried under the shed and partially encased in concrete,” the sheriff’s office reported.

The Thurston County Coroner’s Office identified the remains as Norman.

Zizz, who was arrested on an unrelated child molestation sentencing violation during the investigation, is being held in the Thurston County jail.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Norman family during this unimaginable loss,” the sheriff’s office said on Facebook. “Despite their grief, the family has been actively engaged, supportive and helpful throughout the investigation.”

The sheriff’s office also shared a joint statement from the Norman family on Sunday, saying, in part, “Our family has experienced the loss of our center. Marcia was the one who brought us together… Our family is grieving and looking for ways to honor her memory.”
