The city of Harvey, Illinois, convened its City Council meeting on Monday for the first time in nearly three months. However, the absence of the mayor, amid the city’s financial turmoil, left many residents feeling slighted and concerned about the leadership during these challenging times.

Prior to the main council gathering, a finance committee meeting took place, where auditors presented a mixed yet cautiously optimistic financial update. While they noted that the city is making strides, they emphasized that Harvey still faces an arduous journey to emerge from a staggering debt exceeding $150 million.

The city’s financial woes have already led to significant cutbacks, including the layoff of nearly half the fire department and a third of the police force late last year. In response to the crisis, the council had declared financial distress, a move that could potentially bring state oversight and aid to the beleaguered city.

Despite these efforts, the public comment session was filled with residents voicing their frustration and dissatisfaction. The absence of the mayor only seemed to amplify their concerns, as they seek transparent and committed leadership to navigate through these tough financial times.

Still, during public comment, many residents expressed frustration.

“We, meaning the residents, are not being taken care of,” said Harvey resident Glynis James-Watson. “We are not being given the due notices and the due respect we deserve.”

“I would like to see more collaboration and the ability to move forward in a positive manner,” said Alicia Nicole, another Harvey resident.

Harvey’s mayor pro tem, Dominique Randle El, told residents that they are working on things.

“Harvey is much better than it has been in the past. We are going to continue to try to prove that as well and that’s why you see me trying to manage things,” she said.
