A home health aide has been apprehended for allegedly committing fraud by making illicit purchases amounting to over $600 with a stolen debit card, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.
FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. — Following an investigation, authorities arrested Katie Swain, 32, on charges of fraudulent use of personal identification and grand theft from an elderly person, the Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
The case came to light when, as detailed in a press release issued Monday, a resident of HarborChase of Palm Coast reported suspicious activity on his bank statement in December 2025. He informed police that his wallet, which contained cash and a debit card, had gone missing.
The investigation soon turned to Swain, a newly hired aide at the facility, who was responsible for the resident’s care when the theft occurred, the Sheriff’s Office revealed. Further inquiries led to her arrest.
Through an initial investigation, the sheriff’s office stated that they began an investigation into Swain, who was a new hire at the facility, as she was the victim’s care provider at the time of the report.
In total, police say that Swain made over $660 in fraudulent purchases on the victim’s card and stole $30 in cash.
FCSO arrested her on Wednesday and was later released on a $10,000 bond.
“This woman abused her position of trust and authority as a home health aide for gas, donuts and trinkets,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said. “She stole from a senior that trusted her and used his debit card as her own but luckily for her, there are plenty of snacks she can buy with her own money from the commissary at the Green Roof Inn.”
