An online gaming clash escalated into a cross-state school threat alert, prompting a rapid inquiry by authorities in Putnam County.

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — On Thursday, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office revealed that a tense confrontation during an online gaming session between an adult and a juvenile triggered an investigation spanning multiple states, following an alleged threat to a school.

The alert was issued from several states distant from Putnam County on Wednesday afternoon, when the adult player, reportedly upset over the game’s outcome, threatened potential violence at a school, according to officials.

PCSO detectives swiftly identified the adult’s whereabouts in Putnam County and reached out to him. The investigation concluded that the person in question neither possessed firearms nor had means to access them, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office.

Authorities clarified there is no evidence to suggest the minor, thought to be a preteen, resides in Putnam County, emphasizing that the tip-off emerged from various locations across the nation.

PCSO says while investigators found no criminal offense and determined the comment appeared to be made during a heated verbal exchange, the sheriff’s office said it treats all threats seriously.

As a precaution, additional law enforcement officers will be present at Putnam County schools Friday.

Officials also urged parents to be aware of the online games their children play and who they interact with. They encourage adults who participate in online gaming to be mindful of their language and remember they may be playing against children.

Authorities thanked those who reported the incident, saying tips, regardless of size, play a key role in keeping the community safe.

Investigators have now classified the incident as a non-credible threat.
