A tragic incident unfolded at a Northern California beach where a father and his 7-year-old daughter lost their lives after being caught by a formidable wave, authorities reported on Sunday.
The family was enjoying a day at Garrapata State Beach last Friday when a massive wave, measuring between 15 to 20 feet, swept the young girl into the ocean, as detailed by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
Yuji Hu, a 39-year-old resident of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, bravely leaped into the water in an attempt to save his daughter, but he too was overpowered by the turbulent sea, according to officials.
The girl’s mother also entered the water in a rescue attempt but was quickly overcome by the waves. She was able to make her way back to the shore without assistance. The couple’s 2-year-old child was present but remained unharmed.

The search concluded on Sunday after a diver located the child’s body offshore, as confirmed by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team.
A beachgoer and an off-duty California State Parks officer worked together to pull Hu from the water. They performed CPR before Hu was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The mother was treated for hypothermia and released.
Rescue teams launched a two-day, multi-agency search for the missing girl. Ground teams combed the shoreline and cliffs for signs of the child, while helicopters scoured the area by air and divers searched the sea.

On Sunday, a diver located a body about 100 yards offshore and about half a mile north of where the girl was last seen. The body was brought to shore and later confirmed to be the 7-year-old girl.

“The family has expressed their gratitude to all agencies, personnel, and community members involved in the search and recovery efforts,” the sheriff’s office said. “They continue to request privacy and do not wish to make further statements at this time.”
