The 14-year-old student was charged with two counts of possession of a weapon on school grounds and more.
BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — A student was arrested on Wednesday after bringing a gun to Apalachee High School just months after a deadly shooting at the school killed four people.
The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest. School district officials said that no threat was made, and school resource officers and administration “responded immediately and secured the student and gun.” The incident happened at 2:02 p.m., the sheriff’s office said.
The 14-year-old student was charged with two counts of possession of a weapon on school grounds, theft by taking, and minor in possession of a firearm. The student was booked into the Regional Youth Detention Center.
Following the incident, Barrow County Schools announced that school was canceled at Apalachee High School on Thursday, Jan. 9. 11Alive obtained a copy of an email sent to parents that said students and staff should not report and that Open House is postponed. All on-campus extracurricular activities are also canceled.
The school district has scheduled an emergency meeting for Thursday at 4 p.m. to discuss the incident. Contreras and her organization plan to attend in full force, pushing for additional safety changes such as clear bookbags and advanced A.I. weapon recognition technology.
District leaders and school administration are working closely with the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office regarding the investigation, the letter read.
On Sept. 4, 2024, 14-year-old Colt Gray allegedly brought an assault-style weapon to Apalachee High School, where law enforcement said he opened fire and killed two students and two teachers before being arrested.
Gray currently faces 55 charges, including malice and felony murder. His father, Colin, who is accused of knowingly allowing his son to possess a weapon, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, is facing a total of 29 charges. Both have pleaded not guilty to their charges.
