The government shutdown reached a historic milestone on Tuesday, matching the record for the longest in U.S. history. This unprecedented closure coincided with millions of Americans participating in elections amid a non-operational system.

On Tuesday, the Senate is scheduled to cast its vote on a proposed spending bill for the 14th time. Lawmakers have conceded that any resolution to the ongoing shutdown, which has now persisted for 35 days, will likely emerge only after Election Day.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed optimism about a potential agreement to break the current impasse, which would restore crucial funding to various programs.
