Homeowner seeks accountability as backyard sinkhole expands

ST. LOUIS – A backyard in south St. Louis County is slowly caving in.

With the hole expanding by the day, the homeowner says no one will take responsibility.

Dennis D. first noticed a small dip in his backyard last month. But after recent heavy rain, that dip has become a dangerous drop.

He says his fence posts used to be solid in the ground—now, they’re exposed. And new holes just keep forming.

“There was a hole here and I started to fill it up and this other hole showed up. Then I said, ‘Hmm… I’ve got a problem.’ And I start asking people who to call—and that’s when you get the runaround,” he said.

Dennis says the hole is now creeping across three properties—exposing a spectrum cable box, which Spectrum claims isn’t their issue.

“I was very worried that my house might end up in a hole,” he explained. “And my neighbor’s house—they’re catercorner from my house. Their backyard is starting to end up in my backyard.”

Dennis contacted St. Louis County, MSD and even his home insurance—with little to no response.

MSD told affiliate KTVI they are still investigating and plan to run a dye test and camera to see if it’s sewer-related.

Dennis said that if there are no repairs to his property, he will not be able to sell his home.

Across town—another sinkhole sits wide open near the NGA building on Arsenal Street, with exposed pipes and a private water valve. MSD says they had no record of it until now.

Back in South County, Dennis just wants someone to take responsibility before the ground gives way any further.

FOX 2 reached out to the St. Louis County Public Works Department and Councilman Michael Archer—so far, no word back.
