'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation' themed decorations face possible $2,500 fine from HOA

In a festive showdown with their Homeowners Association, the Gathright family of San Antonio, Texas, finds their holiday spirit under scrutiny. They’ve adorned their home following the “Griswold” theme—an homage to the iconic and exuberant light display from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” However, this cheerful illumination has caught the HOA’s attention for all the wrong reasons.

The HOA has raised concerns that the Gathrights’ decorations are excessively bright. In contrast, the family contends that their display is perfectly aligned with the “Griswold” theme established by the HOA itself for a neighborhood decorating contest.

“When you think of Griswold, you might imagine something extravagant, which my display certainly isn’t,” said Tamara Gathright, the homeowner. “It’s contradictory for them to promote this theme and then penalize us with a $2,500 fine for embracing it.”

According to the Gathright family, the HOA’s citation specifically refers to the glare emitted by their vibrant holiday lights.

The citation is for excessive glare from their holiday lights, according to the Gathright family.

The homeowners argue the display does not create glare and say the violation infringes on their religious rights under Texas law.

“We’re being harassed with people coming by, taking pictures, and we are receiving violations and threats of being fined $2,500 for them,” Gathright said.

The HOA did not respond to request for comment by KENS, as of publishing.

The Gathrights say they are being targeted by the HOA because of prior legal disputes and say they have already sought legal counsel.

However, they plan to keep their Christmas lights up while the dispute continues.

“Grinches and Scrooges aren’t going to steal or stop our Christmas spirit.” Gathright said. “I won’t be bullied.”

The Gathrights say their goal is simply to celebrate Christmas together and share the holiday spirit with their community.

“In the movie, Clark Griswold was the hero,” Gathright said. “He’s the family man who’s trying to celebrate Christmas.”
