Earlier this month, the political world was met with the news of Dick Cheney’s passing due to complications from pneumonia, prompting tributes that spanned the political divide.

WASHINGTON — Dick Cheney, known as one of the most influential yet polarizing figures to have held the office of Vice President in the United States, passed away on November 4 at the age of 84. Serving under President George W. Bush for two terms, Cheney’s tenure left a significant mark on U.S. politics. As plans for his funeral unfold, several media outlets, including USA Today, have begun to share details about the upcoming services.

As the nation prepares to bid farewell to this towering figure, here’s what is known about the arrangements for Dick Cheney’s funeral:

The funeral ceremony for Cheney is scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, November 20.

When is Dick Cheney’s funeral?

Cheney’s funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Eastern on Thursday, Nov. 20.

It’s unclear whether Cheney will lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda before his service.

The Hill reported shortly after his death that Senate Majority Leader John Thune was reviewing “protocol” about whether the former VP would be able to lie in state.

Lying in state is considered one of the highest honors for a deceased person in the U.S. Their coffin is displayed in the rotunda at the center of the U.S. Capitol while mourners file past for a final glimpse of them.

President Jimmy Carter was the last person to lie in state in the U.S.

Where is Dick Cheney’s funeral?

The former vice president’s funeral will take place at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC. The cathedral is often the site of funeral services for honored politicians in the U.S., including President Jimmy Carter earlier this year.

Where will Dick Cheney be buried?

Cheney’s final resting place hasn’t been publicly confirmed by his family. Most presidents and vice presidents choose to be buried in their home state.

For Cheney, that could either be near Lincoln, Nebraska, where he was born or raised, or Casper, Wyoming, where he spent his formative years before going to college.

How did Dick Cheney die?

The 46th vice president of the United States died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, according to a statement from his family. Cheney was surrounded by his family, including his wife, Lynne, and his daughters, Liz and Mary.

“For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming’s Congressman, Secretary of Defense and Vice President of the United States,” the statement read. “Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing.”

A survivor of five heart attacks, Cheney long thought he was living on borrowed time and declared in 2013 he now awoke each morning “with a smile on my face, thankful for the gift of another day,” an odd image for a figure who always seemed to be manning the ramparts.
